Georgene Louis, Esq., State Gaming Representative - Georgene Louis, a Pueblo of Acoma tribal member, was appointed as the State Gaming Representative in August 2007. As the State Gaming Representative, her primary duty is to monitor compliance of the 2001 and 2007 Amended Tribal-State Class III Gaming Compacts entered into by 13 Indian tribes and the State of New Mexico. The State Gaming Representative is responsible for the actions of the State set out in the tribal gaming compacts.
Prior to her appointment, Georgene worked in private practice at Chestnut Law Offices in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she concentrated on Indian law and Indian affairs, including gaming matters related to the development of a gaming enterprise board, tribal gaming and liquor ordinances, gaming related contracts, and federal gaming laws. Georgene also served a three-year appointment as a member of the Acoma Business Enterprises Board of Directors.
Georgene is Chair of the Indian Law Section of the New Mexico State Bar and Board of Directors President for the Acoma Boys & Girls Club. She is also actively involved in the American Bar Associations Young Lawyers Division, where she began by obtaining a Minorities in the Profession fellowship, participated as a member of Special Project: Choose Law Committee, and currently serves as an Assistant Editor for The Affiliate Newsletter.
Georgene received her undergraduate dual degree in English and Philosophy from the University of New Mexico in 2000, and her law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 2004. She is also a 2001 alumni of the American Indian Law Center’s Pre-Law Summer Institute. |
